TBC: Describe the Vanilla Pink client. Lisa: She wants her personality and style to be woven into her gown making it much more special than ‘just a dress’. Her wedding dress could never be one that was just picked off a rack or ordered from stock and altered to fit. It must incorporate her wishes and reflect her style. It is an heirloom piece. She is one who appreciates all the energy that goes into making it…the creation of the design, the fittings, the hand-embroidered labels and finishing touches. Also, a little patience helps with the process of watching the dress take shape and unfold. Yes, you wear it for one day only, but that one day says so much. After all it IS your wedding day!! Shouldn’t it be handmade and reflect you and be the only one of it’s kind on the planet? It represents a time period in your life. Couples put so much time, money and energy into planning the ‘perfect’ wedding, an event that represents them as a couple as they enter into the future as husband and wife. So many times I feel the dress is a little more than an afterthought just to fit into a budget. It’s one of the few precious elements you keep and savor from that day along with the rings, photos and each other! TBC: How did you come up with the name ‘Vanilla Pink‘? |

TBC: What are the three adjectives that describe your style? Lisa: Tastefully done Funky with a slight Vintage-ey feel. TBC: What makes Vanilla Pink distinctive? We work from the ground up, so to speak. Your fabrics are hand chosen, many of them imported from Italy or France. Draping the design to your measurements, creating the original pattern, fitting the muslin and modifying as we go along. We use many time honored techniques that ensure an impeccable fit, comfort and style. I am not a bridal salon with racks of dresses to try on. The dress happens based on our collaboration. Handmade with the finest fabrics. Silk linings. Personal hand-embroidered messages. Hand-embroidered labels. Made one at a time based on YOUR wishes, not the catalog stock. We take on only a few clients at a time making each one special, not just a number. The process and experience is a much more intimate and personal one. It’s a much more ‘old world’ style (if I can use that phrase) of creating your dress. |

TBC: What has been the highlight of your career to date? Lisa: My 10 years experience building costumes for major Broadway shows in New York allowed me to be surrounded by top quality design, fabric and construction which now comes through in my bridal designs. This allowed me to work with several Tony Award winning costume designers and major screen and stage talents. Basically working in a candy store of fabrics, trims and drama!! TBC: What are the key trends for the 2009 wedding season? TBC: In your opinion, what should a bride do before her first appointment at Vanilla Pink? It also helps to try on dresses at salons if she really can’t decide what style makes her feel comfortable, natural and beautiful on her wedding day. A bride needs to skim all the information out there and really decide what it is that says YOU. |

TBC: Do you think ‘color’ is appropriate for a wedding gown? Lisa: Again, if it’s something that the client feels strongly about we’ll make it happen. But she needs to be able to carry it off as her own and not just a trend. I do not like to dictate styles, trends or ideals. I do think color is interesting but it has to be done tastefully. I also believe it’s still your wedding gown and you need to be careful that you don’t create something that is a bridal fashion nightmare that is forever emblazened in your wedding album. TBC: When is a short dress a better choice than a gown? |

TBC: Tell us a little about your personal life, we want to get to know you a little. Lisa: I am married to an amazing guy who supports me in my business and we have an amazing toddler who is ‘all boy’ and takes delight in terrorizing our three cats in a very loving way. I spent 14 years living in New York City. I now reside in New Jersey where you can still see the Manhattan skyline if you’re on the right block. I love collecting anything to do with sewing, old machines, tools, costume and fashion books, ribbons, fabrics, the list goes on and on. We also love cooking, great wines, entertaining and watching just about any series HBO has to offer. And yes, I did have my wedding gown custom made. |
Thanks Lisa for stopping by today…this has been SO much fun!! I’m happy to share with you that Lisa is on ‘the list’…TBC’s vendor list…Crème de la Crème….we look forward to your next visit Lisa and thanks also to Monika Broz….Monica is the amazing photographer behind the gorgeous shots of the gowns. |
