Heather shares their sweet love story……’Our relationship was non-traditional from the start.  We met in 2009 while I was living in Chicago, Illinois working for a large non-profit and he in Moose Jaw, Saskatchewan working as a pilot with the Canadian Forces.  We strengthened our relationship through Skype dates – we would make dinner and sit at the table “together,” trips between the States and Canada, and lots of text messages that wished each other good morning, good night, and eventually, I love you.  We fell hard and were “inseparable” despite our being miles and miles apart.

We dated for a little over a year when we made plans to go on a long vacation together.  Dave took over the reins of planning the trip and wanted to make everything, from where we were going to what we would be doing, a surprise.  On May 7, 2010, I was sent tickets to meet him in Vancouver that evening.  We spent a couple of glorious days in the city, soaking in Granville Island, enjoying the sights, and walking past twinkling shop windows.  On May 9, he announced we were headed to our next destination…Vancouver Island, and, more specifically, Tofino.  We talked a lot about visiting Tofino “one day” and now we were going!  We spent a week on the island enjoying everything it had to offer – surfing lessons in the cold Pacific, biking, and hiking along the myriad of coastal trails.

On Friday, May 14, we woke and planned to enjoy our last adventure of the trip…sea kayaking in Clayoquot Sound!  We set out under cloudy skies and observed monster starfish below us and gulls overhead as we paddled along.  The kayaking was fabulous and the entire trip had been a dream.  We returned to the beach home we rented on Chesterman Beach and prepared to go out to a fancy dinner to wrap up our week.  Dave and I got dressed in our finest and headed out to walk along the beach to dinner.

Suddenly, Dave pulled me over to some rocks and surprised me with incredible words of love and a ring to accompany them.  We were getting engaged!  I couldn’t believe it was happening!  I said “YES!” and we embraced…I will never forget that moment.  It was time to celebrate, so we started walking up the beach again for dinner together while talking about when to call family and friends and flying high on that cloud they call “nine!”

When…suddenly…out of the corner of my eye…I saw…my…Dad.  And, my mom…and sister…and an arbor, and an honour guard, and Dave’s mom…and…OH MY GOSH!  Are we getting married?!  Dave looked at me and said, “If you will marry me today, then yes, we are getting married.”  He had arranged everything for our wedding day…May 14, 2010 on Chesterman Beach in Tofino, Vancouver Island.

A wedding on the beach.  My favorite flowers…peonies.  He wrote all of the vows himself and they were so incredibly true to who we are and what we stand for.  He had our favorite and most wonderful people present to witness our special day.  Dave arranged for a celebration dinner back at the cottage where we were staying.  James Moes, my favorite photographer (who I first saw on this site!) was there to capture our day.  My parents and sister had brought me something new, old, borrowed, and blue.  My mom and dad walked me up the aisle and gave me away.  We had our first dance to our song.  And, as the sun descended on the beach, our vacation, and the beauty of the day, I knew I had married an incredible man…my best friend and now, my husband.

I need to let you know that my husband is incredible. I absolutely love sharing him with others — his humour, care, concern, honesty, and passion make him someone that I want everyone to know. From the moment we met in person on March 13, 2009 at the Blackstone Hotel in Chicago, he has swept me off my feet and continues to do so.’

James, thanks so much for sharing your beautiful work with us today….guys, head over to James Moes  to see so much more of his gorgeous work….and to Heather & Dave….we are excited to see the images of your ‘traditional’ ceremony later this year…we wish you a lifetime filled with happiness and love!
