Kalyn hosted Kathleen in her beautiful New York loft for a one-on-one flower arranging tutorial and invited
photographer Mel Barlow to document the process and results. The approach: super simple…using seasonal flowers easily found at the grocery store, corner deli or farmer’s market, Kathleen taught Kalyn how to make a simple arrangements using vessels found in her home.

The flowers: Kathleen purchased dahlias, lisianthus, alstromeria, stock, geranium and other blooms from the flower market but all these flowers are readily available at many farmer’s markets, local grocery stores, delis, etc. She chose a bold and colorful palette to complement the clean and neutral tones in Kalyn’s home.
The vessels: Two of the vessels used in the shoot are traditional vases found in Kalyn’s home and the third was simply a bedside carafe. Vessels do not have to be particularly unique or complicated – if it can hold water then most likely, it will make a beautiful vase.

The purpose: Kathleen and Kalyn came together to show that living with beauty is easy and accessible. Flowers are the perfect solution to home accessory woes! A little prep (preparing the water, cleaning and cutting the flowers, {basic} understanding of flower placement) and imagination are the keys to a beautiful arrangement et voilà! Simple flowers and vessels turn into something personal and gorgeously lovely.
