Mahlet shares their story with us…….’Our Story:  John and I grew up in and went to neighboring high schools in Kalamazoo, Michigan.  We actually knew each other through other people for most of high school and have some of the same memories from school, even if we don’t always remember the other person being there.  I was friends with John’s best friend in high school and the two of us kept in touch over the years.  In February 2007, John and his friend came out to Philly in February 2007 for an engagement party and they called me up to hang out.  I thought it would be fun to see old friends from high school and never thought I would meet the love of my life.  From the moment that John and I saw each other, we were pretty taken with each other, and by the end of that night, it was over.  We’ve talked on the phone every day since then.  Since he still lived in Michigan and I was in Philly, we were long distance for the entire 3 years and 3 months of our relationship – John actually only moved to Philly 3 days before our wedding!

Our Wedding Story: We knew we wanted to bring in aspects of my culture (both of my parents are from Ethiopia) into our wedding so we tried to think about that in the things that we did for the cermony and the reception.  For our reception venue, we both have large families so we knew we would have to find a place to fit us all.  We fell in love with our venue, which was a little on the small side for our initial guest list and over our budget, but we had to have it there.  So we did a lot of things for our wedding ourselves to cut costs and it all worked out in the end.  I have an amazing family, who helped with everything from one of my aunts doing the flowers to a bunch of aunts helping with stamping all the favor bags to a cousin who brought back a suitcase of things from Ethiopia.  I’m still amazed at how well everything turned out – it even decided not to rain that day! :o)’

Loving the ladies iin all the blue…so pretty!
