MEET BECKY DEVLIN OF ROOST FLOWERS AND DESIGNS

Happy Friday Guys and I’m so excited for our ‘Meet the Designer’ series today…say hello to the oh-so-talented and she’s truly a sweet heart, Becky Devlin of  Roost Flowers and Designs…..located in Virginia Beach, VA…..Becky has been a flower farmer for over ten years….her flowers and designs are GORGEOUS!!…I can’t wait to visit her beautiful farm and see all the pretty and lush blooms….Becky also host the most fun workshops and later today, I’ll be sharing a few images from one that was recently held……you’re going to love it!!..but up first, Becky shares a little bit of her world with us…Enjoy!

TBC:  What’s a typical day like for you?

BD:  My typical day is very atypical… some days are all about flowers, others are flower farming days, and most are dotted with kid-related tasks and fun stuff.

TBC:  What wedding trend would you like to see disappear?

BD:  Although I love the rustic, vintage look, I’ve done so much of it in the past few years that I feel like so many of my referrals these days are for brides who want a “wildflower” look. But, I am really loving the move toward more sophisticated and lush these days.

TBC:  Describe your client?

BD: I’m lucky to say my clients are usually pretty easy going with great taste. Many are eco-friendly brides who love that many of our flowers come from our local, organic flower farm. Others just appreciate the unique and beautiful varieties we have. I’ve been lucky lately to have many who love the same lush, natural look that is my favorite to design.

TBC:  Where do you find inspiration?

BD:  In the gardens, fashion, blogs, magazines, my brides, other designers.

TBC:  Name one of your favorite “vendor” sources that you just can’t do without.

BD:  My farm for flowers and ebay for vessels

TBC:  Describe your design style.

BD: Lush and  natural!

TBC:  To date, what has been the highlight of your career?

BD:  I had a blast last year when Better Homes & Gardens flew me to NYC for a Real Women of Style photo shoot. Unfortunately, it was bumped for a spread on Michelle Obama’s garden!! Being featured on TBC is a close second, though;)

TBC:  OMG…thank you Becky…I’m blushing!!!

TBC:  What advice would you give to upcoming floral designers?

BD:  Try everything prior to the wedding if you aren’t 100% certain of how it will look. Mock-ups are great practice and make for a relaxing wedding design day!

TBC:  You are hosting a personal event/party…and you don’t have time to design the flowers…what floral designer would you ask to design the flowers for the party.

BD:  Oh, gosh…could I pick a team? I love Ariella Chezar, Lewis Miller and Amy Merrick to name a few, but the list goes.

TBC:  When I’m designing, I love to light my candles and play “old school” music.  Do you guys have a ritual that you like to do when designing?

BD:   I like everything neat and tidy and completely organized before I start designing… sort of ‘mise en place’, but for flowers instead of food. And, I always have music on.

TBC:  Describe your personal style…what are your favorite stores to shop at? Personal as in your fashion style or your home.

BD:  We are remodeling an older home we just moved into, and with four kids and two dogs, I am all about Ikea slipcovers lately. I am usually a blue jeans kind of girl, but love funky shoes, and have lived in sundresses this summer.

Just for fun:

TBC:  Do you prefer tea or coffee?

BD: Coffee

TBC:  Do you prefer blogs or magazines?

BD: Blogs for instant gratification, but I still love to hold the glossy pages in my hands

TBC:  Do you prefer Grey or Colour?

BD: My new house is mostly black, white & gray

TBC: And, I have to ask…what’s your favorite flower?

BD: Whatever is in season!
