Emily Thompson Flowers

TBC:  What’s a typical day for you?

ET:  Every day is different! My work varies incredibly, and that’s just how I like it. Some mornings I am at the flower market by 6, other days I am running around town to source materials, visit venues or meet with clients. We nearly always have to clean buckets and bring in new materials.  Opening my flower boxes to see what we’ve got is one of my favorite parts of the day.

TBC:  What wedding trend would you like to see disappear?

ET:  Mason jars. I think these are wonderful for rustic barnyards, but I love beautiful, unusual vessels.

TBC:  Describe your client?

ET:  Adventurous.

TBC:  Where do you find inspiration?

ET:  The landscape.

TBC: Name one of your favorite “vendor” sources that you just can’t do without.

ET: Ebay.

TBC:  Describe your design style.

ET:  Wild and dramatic.

TBC:  To date, what has been the highlight of your career?

ET:  Last year I was invited to be the guest designer for Christmas at The White House. It was spectacular.

TBC:  What advice would you give to upcoming floral designers?

ET: Be true to your own aesthetic. Support local and environmentally responsible growers.

TBC:  Who is one (or two) of your favorite designers?

ET:  There are many current designers whom I admire, but I always go back to Constance Spry.

TBC:  When I’m designing, I love to light my candles and play “old school” music.

TBC:  Do you have a ritual that you like to do when designing?

ET:  For years I played R. Kelly, but that tradition has recently morphed into Missy Elliot.

TBC: If you had to make a career change, what would you do?

ET: Retire! Or maybe go back to my earlier work as a sculptor.

TBC: Describe your personal style…what are your favorite stores to shop at?

ET
:  I wear a uniform, very boring most days, and I also wear a lot of vintage clothes. I haven’t had time to shop in years!

Emily, thank you so much for stopping by the cafe today…it was totally a pleasure to ‘meet you’…guys, head over to Emily’s blog site to see so much more of her work!
