TBC: What’s a typical day for you? Sarah: I tend to have two types of days. One of them is sitting on my couch at home for half of the day writing up proposals and invoices and emails in my pajamas…In the afternoon I might make some flowers and photograph them to get my mind back. The other type of day is full of consultations and errands. I’ll meet with people at my studio, then run around collecting vases, flowers, wire ribbon, etc. for the my upcoming events. TBC: Describe your client? Sarah: My client is artistic and appreciative of nature. TBC: Where do you find inspiration? Sarah: I find my inspiration from nature and the flowers themselves. I can scheme up any color and flower combo in my head, but the best work comes when it was inspired by the flowers when I see them in real life. |

TBC: Describe your design style.
Sarah: Natural and wild (or messy depending on how you look at it). I also like to make lush, full arrangements. TBC: What wedding trend would you like to see disappear? Sarah: The taking of your theme so literally. I think every wedding theme should be wedding. I love personal touches, and those are important to making your day feel like you. But-that doesn’t mean that if you want your wedding to feel a certain way you have to bring objects to place around your wedding that scream your theme. Through your venue, flowers, table settings, food, and attire, you should be able to create the mood that you are going for without having to bring extra stuff in. |

TBC: Name one of your favorite “vendor” sources that you just can’t do without.
Sarah: Aside from the flower growers themselves I’d have to say my vase sources. I have collected a lot of vintage pieces, but I buy a lot from Jamali Garden. TBC: To date, what has been the highlight of your career? Sarah: I’m not sure I could pinpoint one particular thing. After I finish setting up at a wedding I particularly liked I feel totally high. I usually can’t calm down for a few hours. Each one of those becomes my new favorite success. |

TBC: Name one of your favorite designers?
Sarah: This list could get really long….but my all time favorite inspiration is Ariella Chezar. TBC: What advice would you give to upcoming floral designers? Sarah: Just keep designing. Most of the successful florists I know just starting playing around with flowers and kept doing it. Keep experimenting and learning, and consistently put your work out there. |

TBC: When I’m designing, I love to light my candles and play “old school” music. Do you have a ritual that you like to do when designing?
Sarah: It is different each time. It depends on my mood and the flowers I think. Sometimes I like it really quiet and somewhat dark. Others I like the doors and windows open and music on really loud….any kind of music really, but the more upbeat the better. In either mood I will be eating while I am arranging. Cheese, chocolate, or cake. TBC: If you had to make a career change, what would you do? Sarah: I studied the Middle East in school. I think I would be terrible working in the field though, as most of my colleagues went on to government jobs….not my thing. But- would maybe find a job that is related but in a more relaxed, people oriented place. If the artistic side of me needed some attention I might go into merchandising or displays of some sort. |
