Dalia shares their sweet proposal story with us…I love it!…..

‘It was on one of the ‘anniversaries’ of our relationship being official (after years of dating).  As a result I didn’t suspect a proposal when he decided to do something special. He told me to pack a bag and that we were going somewhere. I figured he was doing something special for our anniversary, which we celebrated every year, but this time something was a little different. I didn’t know where we were going to go, and the night before my gut had nervous jitters for some reason, I could not sleep well and felt a little anxious, but I still didn’t believe he could be proposing that weekend because I thought it may not have been the best timing with a lot of things happening in our lives.  I had no idea he had been saving up all this time and had purchased a ring. I guess my heart was telling me something but my mind was not agreeing. See the thing is, when we first started dating back in high school we always new wanted to and would get married. But at that time we were just too young, didn’t have it all together, and the pursuit of a secondary school education, amongst other priorities, was on the horizon before we felt we could support ourselves to make a life together. Plus, we were young.

Things got a little more challenging when two years into our relationship we mutually decided it would be a good opportunity for Jesse to go abroad for school. He was a varsity basketball player (extremely passionate), and needed the opportunity that was before him. The long distance thing (especially at that tender moment in our relationship) was very hard, but eventually we adjusted. We talked every day, took planes, buses, whatever, to see each other when we could over that five year period. We loved each other deeply and the challenges we faced during that time continued to push our relationship to grow.  Sorry…I digressed… Either way, I knew the proposal would come soon, just not in that moment.

He took me to a beautiful hotel venue, and when we were alone he said ‘I planned to do this over dinner, but I can’t wait any longer’ and he pulled out a box and got on one knee. He was so anxious, excited, and I could tell a little nervous too. I also found out later that he did plan to do it at dinner romantically, but the thought of a bunch of strangers peering into this sacred moment didn’t seem right and kind of scared him.

I was giddy…I started to giggle out of nervousness because I didn’t know what to say, I just couldn’t stop smiling. I knew what this meant, and before he even opened the box I said in disbelief and filled with surprise and laughter, ‘what is that?! Put it away…!’ But I knew what it was and I definitely didn’t want him to put it away. I guess you never how you’d react when in a nervous state or during life’s precious moments. This was definitely a milestone for us and something we always wanted. It was a long time coming, but the time was right. He opened up the box, and I was in disbelief, plus the ring was beautiful and he chose it by himself. He was so nervous he grabbed my right hand and I had to give him my left. I just couldn’t stop smiling.  All and all, I was on ‘cloud nine’, for a long time.’
