Heidi shares her journey leading to their wedding day with us……..’We all have flaws.. little idiosyncrasies that make us unique… and totally annoying to those around us. My mother will tell you that from the time I could reason, I would NOT be told what to do. For all of my adult life, I have heard stories of how she would actually persuade me to do the opposite of what she wanted.. because I could always be counted on to do so. The same stood for my wedding of course. So many aspects of a wedding are steeped in tradition, to the point where I feel that there is a template, a script, if you will, that people tend to follow. I think people are so afraid to veer away from it because it’s what’s expected, that hardly any creativity, or personal touch is felt! Now, having said that, in my opinion, you can’t veer so far from these traditions that your wedding resembles Mardi Gras as opposed to the blessed union of your souls. I wondered.. how can I find the balance? How can I spend this special day feeling completely comfortable, not fretting if the band forgets to play Journey, or if one of my false eyelashes falls off.. without completely making my mother cry or offending my husbands entire family? I didn’t want to spend my day feeling like a pageant contestant, smiling and waving, making sure not to smudge my eyeliner or get a crinkle in my dress. That’s so not ME! I didn’t want to be on parade. I didn’t want to be perfect, because I’m not. I wanted to officially commit myself to the man I love in front of everyone WE love, and then throw the party of our lives. I not only wanted my guests to feel completely as ease, but I wanted to LET LOOSE. After all, we had been through a lot to get to this moment.. and as much as I love my friends and family, it wasn’t about them, it was really, truly about US, and our love, and this is what it looks like folks.. love it or leave it.
Roberto and I come from very different backgrounds, but the fundamental values we were raised with are exactly the same. We were going to have so many different types of people at our wedding from different parts of the world, different educational backgrounds, different socioeconomic backgrounds, from brilliant surgeons to tattooed rockers, so I knew I wanted the day to speak to everyone. I wanted to eliminate as much of the structure involved and just let the party evolve into its own entity from the people who were participating. I didn’t feel like we needed a lot of ‘props’ if you will, to make the day special, we knew that the diversity in our backgrounds and all the amazing people we both share our lives with would be the base of what would make our day special. I guess I feel like we really stripped it down and let it flow and I think it was perfect. I think our wedding spoke to who we really are, we are a little bit crazy, really laid-back, not afraid to jump in and get dirty, and we are ALWAYS true to ourselves!! My advice to other brides planning a wedding would be, hire a magnificent band, have really good food that is not too pretentious for its own good, hire a photographer who has a gift for capturing true, organic emotion in the faces of you and your guests, leave your compact in the hotel room, kick off your shoes, and just revel in the amount of love washing over you all day. There really is no other day in your life you will experience it. Don’t get wrapped up in your wedding, get wrapped up in your marriage.’ |
