From Christina……’Without taking into consideration the size of our respective families and communities, Adam and I had wanted an intimate backyard wedding that resembled an English garden party. Since I am my father’s only daughter and come from a very large Greek family, we knew that this would be next to impossible. Once we realized how big our wedding would have to be, we tried to focus on ways to make it feel intimate, even with 250 people. The only available venue in the area that had an outdoor element and could accommodate that number was the Water Works Restaurant & Lounge. The Waterworks happened to be a few feet away from where Adam had proposed, and subsequently ended up being 4 blocks away from where our new home is. Its location by the Art Museum, river, and boathouse row is one of our favourite areas in all of Philadelphia. Being in the city, I knew I had a bigger job to try to accomplish a garden party in an urban setting. We wanted the aesthetic to be loose and chic, but also a mix of formal and rustic. Bringing in trees, mason jar lanterns, loose dripping mixed floral arrangements, and the gorgeous branch and vine chandeliers definitely helped achieve that. I picked every flower in the arrangements with the help of our amazing floral vendor Beautiful Blooms, to make sure they were texturally very different. We also had a slight travel theme throughout the day. Adam and I connected on our first date over a love for traveling, and since that day (3 years exactly from the date of the wedding) we tried to travel every chance we had. The table names were cities we had visited, and the very special place cards were vintage styled postcards with a photo we had taken when we visited that city. We also had vintage travel posters scattered around the venue. The favors were the Greek traditional almonds, covered in chocolate and in delicate lace bags. I had also made the honey favors with my bridesmaids, and we sourced artisinal local honey from my mother-in-law’s good friend in York County, PA. It all worked effortlessly, and we were thrilled when all of the work we put into it paid off with a beautifully intimate, loving, and fun environment. Even with that many people we learned that an intimate party does not necessarily mean it needs to be small.’ |

Any advice that you would give other brides for their big day?
‘The advice I heard the most was fairly basic: Make sure you eat, don’t drink too much, drink a lot of water, and enjoy it. All of that was very important. There are three things though that I believe were crucial. First, get as much done as possible early on, so that in the weeks leading up to the wedding you have absolutely nothing to do. This was the best feeling, to be free of any last minute details, DIY projects or phone calls. Next, stay together. Don’t be one of those couples where the groom goes off with his buddies, and the bride is with her friends. Thankfully that’s our natural dynamic anyway, but it’s important to enjoy the day hand in hand. Also, take 5 minutes at some point during the reception or ceremony to stand back together by yourselves, and look around the room. Recognize that everyone is there for you, because they love and support you.’ |
