REAL WEDDING: KATHY & MATT

Say hello to Kathy & Matt….their beautiful wedding was sent to me by Cliff Brunk….Cliff’s work is AMAZING…simply STUNNING and he is just the coolest guy to work with.  He totally captured Kathy & Matt’s wedding story and when you check out his blog site, be prepared to stay for awhile…it’s packed with gorgeous ‘eye candy’!  Kathy shares her and Matt’s wedding story with us…let’s check out all the fun details…Enjoy!

The location was key to my husband and me.  We both love the outdoors (our third date was a hike).  Nature is very spiritual to me and it was important to us for it to be part of our wedding too.  We also wanted intimacy and privacy.  It took us awhile to find the perfect location. We considered a lot of places:  Yosemite, where we got engaged, had the nature aspect but not the privacy; Tahoe; renting a private house.

However, once we saw Calistoga Ranch and the ceremony site at the back of the canyon, surrounded by trees, a lake, the blue sky and birds flying overhead, we knew this was the place!  It was quiet, serene, and peaceful and we were surrounded by nature – it was PERFECT for us.  I also wanted a simple yet elegant wedding, which Calistoga Ranch provided, and I wanted to provide an experience for those close friends and family coming to celebrate with us.

I did not want a typical wedding, nor a typical wine-inspired Napa Valley wedding, I wanted something different.  I liked that Calistoga Ranch was going to offer this to us and our guests – from the spectacular location and ceremony back-drop to a multi-course dinner of the most amazing food paired with delicious
wine.  Once the location was secured, the rest of the wedding details came together in about 2-2.5 months (the one thing I did have was my dress – the first thing I starting looking for)!

Our engagement pictures were taken in a nearby state park, near where we road bikes a lot .  I wanted the majestic oak trees and the straw-colored grass as the background for our pictures.  I continued to use this oak tree theme as part of the nature inspiration for the wedding décor.  The invitations had a three-oak leaf and acorn graphic at the top, followed by a quote I found ‘To love and be loved is to feel the sun from both sides’.  The oak graphic continued on the RSVP cards and envelopes.  Nature also inspired the colors – green (sage/woodland green), champagne (like my dress), and camel brown (color of some of the text).  I wanted an elegant softness that I think shows in the colors and in the wedding dress I chose and the bridal party dresses.  I also wanted a simple and classic look, one where you can look back at the pictures have the images be somewhat timeless.  I had also wanted a very romantic feel to the wedding, and was drawn to the color red.  We added a burgundy touch of color with flowers at the ceremony site and brought it in to the reception cave as well.  The tables were covered with shimmery champagne-colored linens.  My fabulous floral artist had the creative idea of using our oak/nature theme by adding moss-covered oak branches interspersed in the center of the reception tables and oak branch arrangements in large vases in the entry way of the cave and the bar area.  I also knew I wanted candlelight and lots of it!  We had pillar candles and votives mixed in with contemporary centerpieces of burgundy flowers arranged in square vases, single-type flowers and some added green texture.

Lastly, the photography was VERY important to me and my husband (maybe more so me – I’m the particular one!).  The photography was as important as the location.  Through A LOT of research and several photographer interviews, balancing budget with the style I was looking for, I found Cliff!.  Since we only had about 2 months before our wedding, I was anxious about his availability.  It turned out he was available and ended up being the low-key, very personable, easy-going kind of photographer we wanted.  Aside from that, we thought he’s a meticulous photographer and his photography was gorgeous.  His wife was just as pleasant to hang out with during our shoots too.  We thought they were great and I love what he captured of our day!

The dress:  Maggie Sottero, ‘Anastasia‘ . . .The shoes:  Special Occasions by Saugus Shoes,  Sienna Bridal Wedge.  It was a challenge to find the perfect pair!  Since I was walking on grass for the ceremony, I looked for a wedge shoe so that limited most of the bridal shoes out there.  I finally found one online – simple, elegant and strappy, the right height for my dress that also fit my narrow foot (a lot of requirements for the perfect bridal shoe!).  I had them dyed to match the dress.  They were comfortable too.

I must say the ceremony was my favorite part of the day.  We actually had to let our original officiant go about a week before the wedding, who was more concerned about the length of the ceremony.  Luckily, I found another officiant in Sonoma who respected and honored our nature-inspired ceremony.  She was fantastic!  We brought the elements and cardinal directions into the ceremony script.  A cousin from Santa Fe brought sage bundles from New Mexico which we used in a Native American-inspired smudge tradition with our mothers during our ceremony.  Matt and I ended up writing a lot of our ceremony/provided a lot of the material, including our own vows.  We got a lot of compliments on how beautiful the ceremony was – that it was so me and Matt.  It was unique and, again with my theme, offered a different type of ceremony than most weddings.  To top it off, we hired a harpist to play classical songs for our ceremony and cocktail reception.  I loved that the wedding was elegant yet unique with our nature-based spirituality.

Party favors:  A good friend (a chef) made chocolate and almond biscottis two days before the wedding.  We ordered custom sage-colored labels and clear translucent bags to assemble them in.  Matt and I also compiled about 10 favorite love quotes and I printed them out using a font similar to our invitations in camel-colored ink on vellum paper and included a different quote in each favor bag.

Thanks SO much Cliff for stopping by the cafe today….Kathy & Matt’s wedding is simply beautiful and to Kathy & Matt…we wish you a lifetime of happiness and joy!!

Check back later guys….more beautiful wedding inspiration for ya…..you don’t want to miss it…xoxo
