Piper shares the sweet story of how her and Carl met…….’Carl and I both work in advertising. Every fall in New York there’s a dedicated ‘Advertising Week’ which begins with a concert. In 2008 the concert was a double bill, N.E.R.D. and Big Boi. I was able to get one, just one, ticket from the agency I worked for at the time. Monday night came and I had a decision to make-did I really want to trek up to the Nokia (now Best Buy) Theatre in Times Square and go to a concert alone? I decided to go. I figured I would eventually run into someone I knew there and, truth be told, as a single woman in New York I was used to doing things on my own.

Once inside I started to walk around, looking for a familiar face. I passed Carl a few times and took note; ‘He’s handsome,’ I thought to myself. ‘A Pharell look-alike.’  Finally I found a familiar face, my friend Roy. We had worked together recently, so we chatted, caught up. Then Carl joined us. ‘Hey, do you guys know each other?’ Roy asked. We both shook our heads ‘no’ and Roy handled the introduction.

This is usually where we end the story when people ask how we met. But, for The Bride’s Café and Essence, we’ll continue.

A few rum and cokes later found us dancing together and then Carl asked for my number. I gave it to him and then he disappeared back into the crowd.

Once the concert ended Roy and I were outside the Theater saying good-bye. Then I heard a deliberate whisper in my ear, ‘I’m gonna call you tomorrow.’ I turned my head to find Carl there, smiling. I chuckled a little. Carl raised an eyebrow, ‘are you laughing at me?’ he asked. I told him I wasn’t laughing at him, just at what he said. Having spent a decade as a single woman in New York I had learned not to place any bets on the promise of a call the next day.

Carl wasn’t having any of this. He asked Roy to step aside for a minute, looked at his watch, then leaned in for effect, ‘It is midnight o’one. By noon o’one tomorrow I’m gonna call you.’ As I rolled my eyes he finished with ‘and you better respect that,’ plus a smirk.

Now, this was something new. Sure, it was flirtatious banter, but there was something more. I wasn’t really used to men in New York telling me with such conviction what they were going to do-and requiring my participation, to boot! I was hesitant, and intrigued. Knowing how old Roy was, and taking into consideration Carl’s friendship with him, I was pretty sure Carl was younger than I was, potentially quite younger. So I asked him, more as a challenge than a question, if he was over twenty-five. He smiled big and challenged back, ‘yeah, are you?’

‘That was smooth,’ I answered. ‘We could just get married right now.’

‘Sounds good. I’ll call you tomorrow,’ he nodded, and walked away down Broadway.

It’s still amazing to me that we joked around about getting married the night we met. And yes, before noon o’one the next day I had heard from him.’
