TBC: When did you start Munaluchi Bridal and why?
MB: When I got married 4 years ago, I realized there weren’t any bridal publications for women of color, but never thought I would actually start one! My husband and I started a photography business over two years ago. It was while shooting weddings together that we decided to go ahead and start one. We did extensive research on the publishing industry and our target market…and dove right in. Once we introduced the first cover on facebook, and saw the incredible response, we were certain there was an absolute need for Munaluchi Bridal. The first issue was launched in January of 2010. And here we are with our third issue in just a year! TBC: What 3 adjectives describe Munaluchi Bridal Magazine’s style? MB: Bold, Classy, Elegant TBC: Describe the Munaluchi Bridal reader. MB: The Munaluchi Bridal reader is sophisticated and elegant. She wants to have a classy wedding that’s unique, and may want to incorporate some culture into her wedding. She might be recently engaged and looking for inspiration for her big day, or a hopeless romantic, dreaming of her big day.TBC: What are the key elements that are a “must have” to produce such a successful publication. MB: I’d say you absolutely must have a passion for it. The publishing industry is a tough one, especially if you are new to it. With a strong passion for it, you’ll be able to push through the ups and downs of publishing. You also need to have a very clear vision of your target market. And lastly, you need to be creative and surround yourselves with people who have the same creative energy and drive as you. |

TBC: What is the best part about your job? MB: Oh..where do I begin? There are so many benefits to owning a magazine. My flexible schedule affords me more time with my hubby and little ones. I get to meet so many awesomely talented wedding professionals who inspire me as much as they inspire our readers. Most importantly, there’s nothing more satisfying than getting an email from a bride or a vendor telling me how much they appreciate the publication. TBC: How long does it take to put an issue together….can you tell us a little about the process? MB: Being that the magazine is bi-annual, many might wonder what goes on in-between issues. There’s actually lots of work that goes into putting each one together. My creative team and I get together to go over the Editorial calendar, decide on the major concepts and themes for the upcoming issue. The concepts are created and put onto “inspiration” boards and we basically work off of the “inspiration” boards item by item. Then there are photoshoots…and edits…and redos…and submissions…throw some real weddings in the mix and feature articles, and a few months later you’ve got a gorgeous new glossy. |

TBC: What sets Munaluchi Bridal apart from other wedding publications? MB: Munaluchi Bridal is different from other publications because it’s has a specific niche audience – women of color. Also with the infusion of multi-cultural weddings we expose our readers to different customs from around the world. Those two things are what make this publication stand out. TBC: What are some of your favorite details that truly make a wedding “unique” and “special”? MB: Details make all the difference. I love how a bride can incorporate the most subtle of details to make her wedding standout. For instance, in one of our features, the planner used cassette tapes as escort cards which played well with the “80s-themed” wedding. Such a creative and fun little detail. Definitely thinking outside of the box. TBC: All brides dream of having their wedding published in a beautiful wedding publication….what do you, |
